Changing Places Awareness Day

The Changing Places campaign was officially launched in July 2006. In celebration, the Consortium decided to make July 19th an annual awareness day for the campaign.

Changing Places toilets are important because they provide essential facilities for individuals with disabilities, ensuring their dignity, safety, and inclusion in society.

These specialised toilets are designed to meet the needs of people with severe disabilities who require additional support and equipment to use the toilet comfortably and independently. Here are several reasons why Changing Places toilets are crucial:

1. Accessibility: Changing Places toilets are fully accessible, providing enough space for wheelchair users and their caregivers. They are equipped with hoists and changing benches, allowing individuals with limited mobility to transfer safely and comfortably.

2. Hygiene: These toilets have specialised equipment such as adjustable height sinks and showers, which enable individuals to maintain their personal hygiene independently. This promotes self-confidence and reduces the risk of infections or other health issues.

3. Inclusion: By providing Changing Places toilets, we create an inclusive environment that allows people with disabilities to participate fully in public life. Accessible toilets ensure that individuals can enjoy outings, shopping, and leisure activities without worrying about the lack of suitable facilities.

4. Safety: Changing Places toilets are designed with safety in mind. They have non-slip floors, grab rails, and emergency alarms, ensuring that individuals with disabilities can use the toilet without the risk of accidents or injuries.

5. Caregiver support: These toilets are equipped with hoists and changing benches, which significantly ease the burden on caregivers. They provide a safe and comfortable space for caregivers to assist individuals with disabilities, reducing the physical strain and promoting their well-being. They also often include privacy screens allowing carers to use the toilet with privacy while ensuring the safety of the person they are caring for.

6. Legal requirements: In many countries, including the UK, there are legal requirements for public buildings to provide accessible toilets. Changing Places toilets fulfill these requirements, ensuring compliance with disability discrimination laws and regulations.

7. Advocacy: The provision of changing places toilets raises awareness about the needs of people with disabilities and promotes a more inclusive society. It sends a powerful message that everyone deserves equal access to essential facilities, regardless of their abilities.
